God gave a few requirements for being a prophet in Deuteronomy 18.

Deuteronomy 18:17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”

1) The prophet must be an Israelite.
2) The prophet must never falsify God's message.
3) The prophet must never promote other gods.

This causes a few problems for Muhammad.

1) Muslims believe that Mohammed is a descendant of Ishmael. As proof of their position, Muslims refer to genealogies written around 770-775 A.D. by Ibn Ishak.
If Muhammad is a descendant of Ishmael, he could not be an Israelite.
Muhammad is disqualified from being a prophet because of his genaeology.

2) In an effort to gain acceptance from some polytheists, Muhammad said their gods were accepted.  Later, he relented. Muhammad lamented: "I have fabricated things against God and have imputed to Him words which He has not spoken."
If Muhammad falsified God's message for any reason, he could not be a prophet.
Muhammad is disqualified from being a prophet because of his message.

3) Muhammad promoted other gods.
 TABARI volume 6, page 107
The messenger of God was eager for the welfare of his people and wished to effect a reconciliation with them in whatever ways he could. It is said that he wanted to find a way to do this, and what happened was a follows. (170)
Ibn Humayd - Salamah-Muhammad b. Ishaq - Yazid b. Ziyad al-Madani - Muhammad b. Ka'b al-Qurazi: When the messenger of God saw how his tribe turned their backs on him and was grieved to see them shunning the message he had brought to them from God, he longed in his soul that something would come to him from God which would reconcile him with his tribe. With his love for his tribe and his eagerness for their welfare it would have delighted him if some of the difficulties which they made for him could have been smoothed out, and he debated with himself and fervently desired such an outcome. Then God revealed:(171)
"By the Star when it sets, your comrade does not err, nor is he deceived; nor does he speak out of (his own) desire..."
and when he came to the words:
Have you thought upon al-Lat and al-Uzza and Manat, the third, the other?
Satan cast on his tongue, because of his inner debates and what he desired to bring to his people, the words:
"These are the high flying cranes; verily their intercession is accepted with approval. (172)
If Muhammad promoted other gods for any reason, he is a false prophet and worthy of the death penalty.
Muhammad is disqualified for being a prophet because he promoted other gods.

Conclusion: Muhammad cannot be a prophet, or a messenger of God for 3 very serious reasons.

Furthermore, The Quran was so full of discrepancies that Muhammad had to make up a doctrine of abrogation.

Quran 22:52 says,
"And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke [or recited], Satan threw into it [some misunderstanding]. But Allah abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allah makes precise His verses. And Allah is Knowing and Wise."

In other words, Satan threw in some words that were incorrect, but God corrects it later.  If Satan could throw in something in a prophet's words in the first place, that would invalidate that person as a prophet.

Quran 4:82 states:
"Do they not ponder on the Qur'an? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much discrepancy."

So, if there are discrepancies,  it must be from other than God. But Muhammad is still pressured to explain the discrepancies, so we get this explanation:

Quran 2:106
"We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?"

The seriousness of these abrogations were well known, so yat another explanation had to be made up.

Quran 16:101
"And when We substitute a verse in place of a verse - and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down - they say, "You, [O Muhammad], are but an inventor [of lies]." But most of them do not know."

So now the argument becomes nothing more than 'you just have to accept Muhammad's new revelation.'

Last, but not least, Muhammad proved that Muhammad was a false prophet!

In Quran 69:44-46 we find the following:

"And if Muhammad had made up about Us some [false] sayings, We would have seized him by the right hand; Then We would have cut from him the aorta."

But when Muhammad dies, in SAHIH BUKHARI Volume 5, Book 59, Number 713 Narrated by Ibn Abbas, we find out

" Ibn 'Abbas replied, "That indicated the death of Allah's Apostle which Allah informed him of." 'Umar said, "I do not understand of it except what you understand." Narrated 'Aisha: The Prophet in his ailment in which he died, used to say, "O 'Aisha! I still feel the pain caused by the food I ate at Khaibar, and at this time, I feel as if my aorta is being cut from that poison."
